ON EAST JAVA

 WALI SONGO PILGRIMAGE

PREFACE :

Welcome to East Java! It is a great pleasure to introduce WALI SONGO PILGRIMAGE, a new publication which focuses on a special area of cultural influence, namely the tombs, mosques and other historical remains of some of Indonesia's early missionaries.

The photograph on the following pages skecth a rough historical sequence, beginning with the earliest remains to be found in the region of Gresik, East Java, and from there moving westward, through Central Java to Cirebon. Rather than attempting to provide detailed information about the tombs of nine walis, the purpose of this book is more a general introduction to some of most important locations connected with the Wali Songo, at the same time revealing Areas of Primary Touristic Interest (APTI). As such, it should prove to be useful reference, not only for individual travellers, but also for those involved in the travel business, agents, tour operators and product designers.

Within the Visit Indonesia Decade, and especially for this Visit A.S.E.A.N. Year 1992, WALI SONGO PILGRIMAGE is both a valuable and appropriate addition to East Java's expanding travel library.

Further information will be provided as soon as possible.
