POPULATION AND SOCIAL AFFAIRS

Based on the data from the population registration, the total population of East Java in mid-1993 was 32,206,052. This is an increase of 0.57 percent as compared to the previous year.

The population density increased as well. By comparison, the population density in the middle of 1992 was recorded at 668 persons/sq. km. This number increased to 672 person/sq. km in 1993, an average ranging from 251 persons/sq. km to 8,283 person/sq. km.

Banyuwangi is the least densely-populated area and Surabaya is the most densely-populated area.

According to the information from the Department of Manpower of East Java, the number of job-seekers in 1993 was 591,852 persons. However, job vacancies were available for only 66,846 persons.
