The Economic Condition in General
On a national scale, East Java has become the prime supplier of food-based agricultural products. Agricultural activities play a vital role in the economic structure. Other potential business activities include the trade, hotel, restaurant, and manufacturing industries. East Java has the strongest potential for development in industry, service, and agriculture.

Agricultural Fields
In the economic structure of East Java, agricultural fields are still playing a significant role. This is reflected by the Regional Gross Domestic Product of the province. In addition to supplying the region with food, the agricultural sub-sector is able to add to the stock of national foodstuff. In the coming years, East Java will increase foodstuff production in order to maintain self-sufficiency.

Trade and Cooperative Affairs
The value of export production in East Java has shown a remarkable increase from year to year. This signifies that the development climate in trade is improving for non-oil and non-gas export. In cooperative affairs, East Java will attempt to establish a cooperative Province through a national campaign concerning cooperative awareness, and to set up an economic democracy on the village level.

Mining and Energy
East Java has unrealised potential in mining that could result in increased revenue. For planned land use, it is wise to give proper attention to the distribution of mining sites in order to conserve the environment. Energy development (especially electric power) in East Java shows considerable growth. An increasing number of villages receive the village electric program. Natural gas has also been produced in East Java by the state-owned gas company. The prospects for gas energy in East Java are still remarkably good. New site development is considered for areas such as around Gresik and Madura island. In the long run, achievements in energy can encourage the activities in rural areas to improve for the benefit of East Java regional development as a whole.

Tourism
Tourism development in East Java is encouraged to make use of natural resources such as: culture, historic sites, scenery, etc. Tourism potentials available in East Java include:

Beaches
Mountains/Forests/Recreational Sites
Caves
Crater Lakes, Lakes, Reservoirs
Cultural Attractions, Museums, Temples, Tombs, Fortresses,Traditional Performances, and more.

These tourism potentials are not in optimum use yet. They should be explored and developed further. Deterrents for development in this region are: 1) lack of superior infrastructures (such as good roads), and 2) lack of other facilities and package tours.
