DEMOGRAPHICAL, SOCIAL, AND CULTURAL CONDITION
According to population census in 1990 the number of the population of the second level region is 1,143,344 and it increased to 1,169,642 in 1994 consisting 569,133 for the male and 600,509 for female by the average population occupacy of 645 persons/km2. In general the characteristic of Lamongan people is Islamic and 98.56 % of it people are Moslems, which is influenced historically by its northern part of the region called Drajad village has been an Islamic center in Java, where Sunan Drajad lived as the one of Islamic Saints of Wali Songo.
The people's educational level in this region is still considerably low, which is up to 1993 the educational condition and the facilities are as follows:

  1. From 475 villages there are 752 general kindergartens and 76 Islamic kindergartens. It means that every village has more than one kindergarten.
  2. There are 1,348 Elementary Schools, including State and Islamic, after the program of Learning/education obligation is acknowledged by the President in May 1984, the participation of 7-12 years old to elementary schools increased up to 99.62 % accommodated by the total school above.
  3. The transition number of elementary up to Junior High school graduates grow up to 79.13 % by the total of 262 schools.
  4. So the transition number of Junior to Senior High School level graduates which increased up to 73.37 % which is accommodated by 137 Senior High School level,graduates which increased up to 73.37 % which is accommodated by 137 Senior High School level, including State and private schools.
  5. There are 8 private universities in this region. The health level of the People is fairly stable. The birth rate shows 10.45 per a thousand persons whereas the death rate is 5.67 per a thousand persons. Hope of living age is achieving 65 years.
