People built traditional wooden or bamboo houses along both sides of
the river. They call these floating houses "Lanting". River transportation is
the most dominant means of transportation. Besides, the river are also the centre of
economic activities, such as traditional trading which is done on boats. You can find
these floating markets everywhere.
Taking a journey on boat
along Martapura River and Barito River gives a specific impression to visitors, for a
short distance water sightseeing you can take "Klotok" or "Bis Air"
and for the longer one, you can take a speedboat, This kind of journey will show you the
actual daily life of Banjarese people.
The increasing number of
shopping centres which sell various things such as clothes, electronic equipments,
handicrafts, food, and fruit, has developed the trade, industrial and tourist sectors.
These shopping centres are "Pusat Perbelanjaan Mitra Plaza" on Jalan Pangeran
Antasari, Junjung Buih Plaza on Jl. Pangeran Samudra, Pasar Ujung Murung, on Jl. Ujung
Murung, Pasar Baru on Jl Pangeran Samudra, and Pasar Antasari on Jl. Antasari, all of them
are in the centre of the city.
For the accomodation, these
are seven hotels which are four stars categories and 35 non-stared "Melati" type
hotels. The entertainment facilities are among others, cinema, karaokes, and art shows
performance in some restaurants that serve local menu as well as international ones.
