POPULATION

Manokwari has a population of 130,407 inhabiting 12 districts with 132 villages. Manokwari town, also known as Fruit Town, was the first post of the Netherlands New Guinea Government in Irian Barat (the former name for Papua). Manokwari was also the first place from where the Gospel was introduced to the Irianese by the two Protestant pastors, Ottow and Geisler, who landed there on February 5, 1855.

CLIMATE

Manokwari has a wet climate with an annual rainfall average of 2.688 mm, an annual rainy day average of 123. Its weather ranges from 26° -32° C. It has an average humidity of 84,7% and a sunshine intensity of 54.34%.

FLORA

Plants there are similar to those in Australia. Most of its land area is covered with tropical forests such as: brackish forest, swampy forest, mossy forest etc. Besides some particular tress like "matoa" and "tipis", various types of orchid aiso grow there.

FAUNA

Parrots, cockatoo, bird of paradise, sea pigeon, monitor lizard, turtle, and various kinds of fish can be found there.
